Healing begins with our people having a voice in the pathways built to support them.

At the NNADAP Conference in Toronto, our SixMiles/7Sticks team joined more than 100 participants representing First Nations across Ontario. We shared the work taking shape through SixMiles: cultural teachings, lived experience, accountability and practical support for people returning to community.

Our people and teachings.

Austin Staats contributed to the opening-day panel. Miles General closed the conference with a 90-minute presentation, connecting his experiences in ironwork, lacrosse and healing with the responsibilities that guide our work today.

Seven Generations teachings, patience, listening and connection remain at the heart of that work. We believe our communities must help define meaningful healing, with our teachings and understanding leading the way.

A team contribution.

Every member of the team contributed. Derek Bomberry spoke with representatives of the Ontario Provincial Police and Six Nations Police about relationships between services and our people. Hattie Anderson shared the growing work of the SixMiles Women’s Support Circle. Matt Turner supported the team’s presence and the administrative work behind it.

Continuing the conversation.

Before the conference ended, three First Nations had expressed interest in community visits to discuss local needs. We left grateful for the welcome, the honest conversations and the possibilities for continuing this work together.

Passing the ball to our next seven generations.
